In Naples, a tradition of Roman civilization provided for the display of sacred images of the Lares, that are minor deities, on the walls of the Insulae and the Domus, the places to live. Votive edicts existed already in Greek and Roman times and with the edict of Theodosius I in 397 A.D., the construction of these symbols of devotion was encouraged by replacing the themes of pagan worship with Christian themes.
